The first thing you´ll do is to melt the chocolate couverture in a water bath until it´s completely melted.

Once it´s melted, you´ll just dip half the pretzel in the chocolate and remove the excess chocolate with a toothpick.

Place the covered pretzel over a parchment paper and continue with the whole bag.

French Macaron Recipe

IMG_9531

Hello!.. today I want to show you guys what I did last friday with my cousin and a friend. We made French Macarons, this is a very trendy dessert that it tastes delicious, The big occasion was the opening of my friend´s husband Chiropractic Clinic and we needed a lot of food! Here is the full recipe for the French Macaron cookie and one type of filling.

PS. I´m going to write in bold font the most important tips you can´t miss.

español2   Hola!..

ingredients

…for 24 completed sandwich cookies.

pinch of salt pizca de sal
¼ tsp cream of tartar (2 ml)* ¼ cucharadita de crema tartara *

* You can omit if needed * Puedes omitir este paso si es necesario.

IMG_9464

Tip 1: I seriously advice that you creat a template of circles to put under your parchment paper with that you´ll have all the cookies with same size and avoid the dificulty of matching up the pieces to creat an even size sandwich. You´ll still gonna have to make the matching of cookies but it´s going to be easier.

IMG_9467

The first thing you´ll do is to combine the almond flour and the confectioner sugar into a mix, then run it through a strainer to make it as powdery as possible. Set the mixture a side and proceed to the next step. If you can not find the almond flower you can make it yourself by putting peeled sliced almonds through a food processor.

macaron

Step 2: You are going to beat your egg whites and slowly add a pinch of salt, the cream of tartar, and the granulated sugar until you get a merengue quality mix.

IMG_9469

Below I show you some pictures of the perfect peak for the merengue, keep beating until you get the peak in the right picture.

WRONG (malo) RIGHT (bueno)

Step 3: Add to your merengue the mixture of sugar and almonds one cup at a time and gently mix them together trying no to deflate the merengue.

IMG_9474

Step 4: Add your food coloring and mix again, you can divide the mixture in two or more if you want a variety of colors for your macarons. Do not over mix or you´ll get a very flat macaroons that would not create those famous foot/feet or ridges, if you under mix it the macaron will crack on the top. Those are the two most common mistakes.

IMG_9476

Step 5 :Put the mixture on a piping bag as shown below, Place your baking sheets with the parchment in front of you.

macarron6

Step 6: Proceed to star pumping the meregue over your paper in a vertical position as shown below and pumping until you fill the complete circle of your template. After you finish the whole tray, grab your tray and bang it over your counter top to get rid of the bubbles and make them flatter. If you still have peaks just dip your finger in some water and flat them down.

You´ll have something that looks like this, mine were a little liquidy because I over mix them.

Another Tip: And I think this is the most important one, you have let your macarons rest for 20 to 30 minutes because they have to create almost like a crust, tacky to the touch, not sticky, so when you bake them the rise up not spread out. Trust me I ruined my first try.

macaron3

While wanting to the macarons rest, preheat your oven until 300º F, Bake for 10 to 15 minutes tray by tray, because they will bake evenly. Even if they look done like the picture below they are not done, they will stick to your tray. In my case I had to put them in the oven another 5 minutes because they were under bake. Just make sure that they have a little golden color, with out being burned.

IMG_9486

Then you´ll proceed to make the matching of the pieces, pipe some filling (recipe below) and put another piece on top to create the sandwich. Aply the filling with a pastry bag instead of spreading with a knife because the pressure could break your cookie.

macaron5

You are done! You have created the Classic French Macarons. I just want to say in case your macarons turn out to be a disaster don´t be discourage, this recipe is super hard, even the professionals admits it. Keep trying and you´ll get there.

IMG_9495

For the filling you´ll need: | Para el rellenos necesitaras:

1/2 cup granulated sugar 1/2 taza de azucar normal
2 large egg whites 2 claras de huevos
1 stick of unsalted butter 1 barra de mantequilla sin sal
1/4 tsp. vanilla 1/4 de cucharadita de vainilla
Pinch of salt una pizca de sal

Heat in a boiling water bath a bowl with the egg whites and the sugar, beat until the mixture is hot to the touch, then take it to your mixer and beat until it gets cold approximately 3 minutes, after that you`ll add a stick of butter in small cubes and beat for 2 minutes. Then add the vanilla and the pinch of salt and mix again. And then you are done, put the mixture in a piping bag to fill your macarons.

DIY Ikat Bowl

I spotted this Antropologie ikat mini bowls and I think they are so cute. Unfortionaly we don´t have that store here in México and when I saw them for the first time it was too late to purchase one online they were sold out. So I found a pretty similar white bowl on walmart and decided to make one for myself.

  ikat

The idea came because I saw a post that you can bake ceramic with sharpie designs to make it permanent and thought I could do that with the ikat one!. So I did! And I think the final result is really pretty. Let me Know what you think!

Sterling Style

materials2

| A bowl | Sharpie or Bic Marking Marker | Gold marker or gold paint |

IMG_8905

The first thing I did was analyze tha design I wanted. so it would look very similar, The first step you´ll do is to trace your design with fine lines over your bowl,  in case you mess it up you can always wipe it out with some alcohol and it will be completely clean. You should start by flipping over your bowl and dividing  the bottom part in symmetric parts (shown below). Then you proceed to fill your design.

IMG_9427

IMG_8907

As a final detail I painted the mouth edge with some gold paint (picture not shown) You have to be very careful in this step, I used a fine brush and I let it dry completely before using it. My plan is to use this bowl as a jewelry organizer, I would´nt recommend to use is for food because the cleaning could erase the paint. I´ve seen some tutorial where the say you can bake it and becomes permanent but it hasn´t been proved! Maybe you could!.. let me know!

Check all the projects!  I also posted this project!

DIY Gold Chevron Desk Tray (Kate Spade office)

Hi, this time I´m going to show you a tray that I did a few weeks ago and I really really liked it, the result is very functional and pretty. The chevron pattern as you probably know is very in right now, Kate Spade is one of the brands that are exploiting this pattern, and I think in golden colors it could look very elegant and fun at the same time. I want to apologies in advance for some of the pictures, I tend to get creative on the late ours of the day so taking picture at night makes them look very ugly. Promise to take my tutorials pictures in the mornings! 🙂

IMG_9188

materials2

White Spray paint in white for your base (primer or regular paint) | Gold spray paint for the chevron pattern or any color you prefer |  Transparent gloss spray paint for a final coat | Masking tape (in my case I used a thin one so the chevron pattern looks smaller) | pencil | ruler | scissors |

IMG_8983

Of course you´ll need the actual tray it could be a plastic one like mine or it could be a wooden one or even metal. This tray was my moms and she never used it, it was pretty but not pretty enough.

IMG_8937

First step is to sand a little the surface so the paint would stay longer. Now go ahead and paint it white. After that you´ll have to wait at least a couple of hours or you´ll regret it. I let it dry about 12 hours!

IMG_8966

Then you will have to divide one of the sides in 4 or more lanes depending on the size of your tray. You´ll have lanes that you are going to fill with angled stripes of tape leaving empty spaces the same width as the tape.

IMG_8967

After you finish the first lane, trace with your pencil a line over the tape and proceed to cut the excess of tape beyond the line, with you´ll proceed to start the second lane, but in mirror reflect angles >. As shown in the second picture.

IMG_8968   IMG_8969

Cut the excess to create a clean shape.

IMG_8973

You´ll have something similar to this when you are done.

IMG_8971

Cover the whole permitter with tape and with paper make something like a box around it to avoid painting everything surrounding our project.

IMG_8975

Spray Paint with at least two coats waiting between each coat. Once its dry remove the tape to reveal the beautiful design.

IMG_8978

After you peel all the tape, Give it a double coat of transparent gloss to preserve the design and the sparkly golden color.

IMG_8980

Listo! …You are done!… You can use this for anything that  you want. I would not recommend using this for food or messy uses, because the constant cleaning of this might peel the paint off with time. So keep it clean with a moist cloth. Enjoy and let me know what you think!.

DIY Mother´s Day Bookmark

Hi, this is a very funny post!.. I was looking for kids crafts tutorials a few months ago because I´m also an art teacher in my aunts school. And I came across with this picture in Pinterest of course. And I thought it was hilarious and perfect for a kids project. Since here in México tomorrow is Mother´s Day (always May 10th) I thought we could make this awesome bookmarks.

materials2

A digital camera | a place to print pictures or a printer | scissors |cutter or exact knife | Adhesive Plastic Sheets |some thread or ribbon.

First you have to take the pictures and tell the model (in this case the kids) to fake like they are hanging from a rope in their tippy toes and graving something to be able to place the ribbon. You can edit your pictures in photoshop if needed.

IMG_9300

Once you have your pictures all printed in my case (5 x 7 in) go ahead and star cutting around the persons body, the key is to cut exactly at the edge of the person so it could look more realistic.

IMG_9303

Once you cut all around, with a exact Knife cut everything that was missing that the scissors wont do it.

IMG_9305

This is such an easy thing to do that you can let the kids do it by them self, with less sharp scissors depending on their ages.

IMG_9308 IMG_9311

Once you have them all cut out, place them on top of the adhesive plastic sheet, to make sure they all fit.

IMG_9314

You´ll need two sheets, one for the front and one for the back.  Once you have done that peel one sheet and star placing the photographs over it very carefully.

IMG_9315

Once you place them all cover the back side with the other sheet making sure not to leave bubbles. This is easier with thicker films instead of the very thin ones, the thin ones tend to get wrinkles and could ruin the project.

IMG_9316

For my older and very shy students I try something different that it going to look very cool too. (Less childish option)

IMG_9318

The last step is to punch some little holes one on top of the hands and another one under so you can tie the ribbon or thread. I forgot to take a picture of this step but hopefully this last picture shows you exactly.

As you can see, this is a very fun and cool project to do with the kiddos, It´s going to last forever and I think any mom would love to have their kids in their Bibles or favorite books.

We also printed a second round of pictures to make something like a flag garland… (adding the pic latter.)

DIY Kate Spade inspired iphone case

I have always loved this Kate Spade´s iphone case also the black polka dots one, So I decided to make one myself. This DIY is really simple, you´ll need some basic materials and a couple of days.

materials2

Spray paint in Gold, white, transparent and another color (in my case aqua blue).

IMG_9209

You´ll also need some circular adhesive labels for your pattern I chose ones from 1cm diameter. Also of course you´ll need an iphone case I bought mine on ebay for like 1 or 2 dollars directly from china. 🙂

IMG_9211

IMG_9212

I purchase the ones I used in a craft store just like this, but you can find them in places like office depot in small packages and different sizes.

IMG_9253

Step 1: You have to sand a little bit the surface to allowed the paint to stick better, use a very high number sand paper that means a very soft sand paper not rough. After that you have to clean it very well before painting.

IMG_9241

Step 2: Paint the first color, this is the color that the polka dots are gonna be. If you choose another color for the dots this is the time to paint it.

VERY IMPORTANT STEP —> STEP 3: Don´t forget to apply a transparent coat after step 2 especially if you are using metallic colors because when we put the labels on in step 4, metallic paint tends to loose the sparkly coat very easily when you peel the labels off, so we have to protect it with this transparent coat.

IMG_9244

Step 4: Then you´ll stick the labels in order of your design, make sure that they are well put not peeling off.

IMG_9279

Step 5: Go ahead and paint it white very fast because the sticker / labels start to peeling off right away.

Step 6: After its completely dry, you´ll peel off all the labels with the help of a exact knife or a tooth pick.

IMG_9283

Small mistake.  Very important.

IMG_9286

Step 7: If you want the edges colored, you´ll have to use some masking tape or painters tape and go around the whole diameter. I just stick it from a very small edge of 1 millimeter.

IMG_9287

Step 8: Flip over and paint with our favorite color. I put a paper inside so the insides would not  get painted.

IMG_9290

Step 9: Peel off the tape and reveal the perfect colored frame .

IMG_9292

And  tadaaaa!. You have a very beautiful iphone cover that looks awesome, you can do this on any iphone or android phone covers just wont work on silicone ones because the paint will crack.

Untitled-2

IMG_9319

You can create any design you´ll like even using basic materials like painters tape or if you have pretty small decals you can used the too. Here are some examples of pretty ones you can accomplish very easily.
